California QSO Party

The 46th annual California QSO Party starts at 1600 UTC on 6 October 2012, striving to have all 58 California counties on the air.

Although mostly a USA/VE contest, there is surprisingly high DX participation and there are awards for the DX winners. Special edition T-shirts are also available for purchase.

Last year almost 1000 logs were submitted. Activity is always high. You can work the same station on all bands 2-160 meters on both CW and SSB so there’s rarely a dull moment.

A standard exchange is - Serial number and state/province for stations outside of California (serial number and “DX” for stations outside of the USA and Canada)

Serial number and county abbreviation for California stations (the abbreviations are listed here - http://www.cqp.org/cqp_multipliers.html

Banbury Canal Day

On Sunday 7th October 2012, the Banbury Amateur Radio Society will be running an amateur radio station from Spiceball Park in Banbury as part of the 2012 Banbury Canal Day event.

The group will be operating on HF and VHF to demonstrate the basics of our hobby to the general public. There will be a selection of material on display, posters, magazines etc., to show what amateur radio is all about plus a television camera roaming the event and transmitting live pictures back to our site.

Has 2O12L broken a world record?

The team at 2O12L, the amateur radio special event station for the London Olympic and Paralympic Games, believe that they have now broken the world record for the number of contacts by a Special Event Station.

It is believed the record was made by DQ2006X during the 2006 World Cup, their total made between 13 May and 16 July 2006 was 47,790 contacts.

At 2142UTC on 21 August, 2O12L made contact number 47,791.

The team would like to thank the thousands who have joined the pile-ups to contact 2O12L and now they look forward to hitting their overall target of 60,000 QSOs. 2O12L goes QRT on 9 September after the Paralympic Games' closing ceremony so there is plenty of time to work the station or get more band-slots.
