Aberdeen Radio Club Celebrate 70th Anniversary

The Aberdeen Amateur Radio Society is celebrating collective learning, experimenting and enjoyment of Amateur Radio for 70 years. 

Founded in the aftermath of World War II, the Aberdeen Amateur Radio Society (AARS) has made contact with hundreds of groups of radio technology aficionados from across the globe.

And despite the advent of the digital technology completely changing the face of electronic communication, the organisation's 55 members from across the north-east still meet every week in person.

New RSGB Microwave Manager

The Board of the Radio Society of Great Britain has appointed a new Microwave Manager, Barry Lewis G4SJH 

The Society has been looking for a new Microwave Manager for two years since the previous manager Murray Niman G6JYB was appointed as Chair of the RSGB Spectrum Forum in July 2014. Since then, Murray has been covering the Microwave role until a new volunteer could be found.

UK Amateur WW2 Effort

A local newspaper in the North of England has praised and documented the efforts of local Amateur / Ham Radio Operator Joe Noden G6TW, who was recruited by the UK Government's Radio Secret Service (RSS), monitoring shortwave frequencies on his Skyranger receiver.

 

Joe’s role included listening to Morse Code transmissions, recording information he heard and passing the information to Bletchley Park for analysis and decoding.

Many signals received may of sounded important, however without decoding, the importance of the information was not always immediately apparent. However on one occasion, Joe received information from a German hideout in Heligoland transmitting vital shipping movements.

Joe’s actions enabled the Secret Service to locate the source of the transmission and within days the enemy base was bombed and destroyed by the RAF.
