Canadian Radio Amateurs of the Year 2017

Canadian has honoured two Amateur/Ham Radio Operators as their Radio Amateurs of the Year 2017.

Don Studney, VE7DS and Keith Witney, VE7KW, were awarded as co-recipients of the RAC Amateur of the Year Award for 2017 for their work that made VE100VIMY a part of Canadian Amateur Radio history.

The project was a uniquely Canadian special event station VE100VIMY, and the conception, planning, organizing and fulfillment of the project was done by Don Studney, VE7DS, Team Leader and Keith Witney, VE7KW, Deputy Team Leader and Chief Engineer of the Vimy Commemorative Station Society. Together, Don and Keith made the project happen, a project that involved more than 40,000 Amateurs around the world!

Young Amateurs Radio Club Launched

Sterling Coffey N0SSC has announced the launch of a new radio club made by the youth, for the youth

Described as an amateur radio club for those who don't remember the Cold War, Sterling says there is no hard and fast age rule. He's 26, and there are even some members in their 30's, although most members are either in high school or college.

There are several youth oriented radio clubs and organizations but they’ve all been created by older hams as an initiative to attract youth into the hobby. They have served their purpose well, as now the youth are beginning to form their own clubs.

Tony Lord, G8DQZ, SK

The UK 5MHz team have advised the terrible news that one of its most dedicated mainstays, Tony Lord, G8DQZ, passed away last week.

He was a GB2RS Newsreader on 5MHz for many years and instrumental in the UK 5MHz Experiment, which led to the band being made available to UK and, latterly, more countries around the world.
