Amplitude Modulation Amateur Radio Society

Amplitude Modulation Amateur Radio Society has been formed.

The aim of the society is to promote the use of the original voice mode using vintage, modern and homebrew equipment on all the amateur bands available to us. We shall also strive to promote the AM mode to the National and International societies to ensure the mode is supported for future generations.

The initial work to set up this new society has been undertaken by Kevin GW0PUH, Alan G6RBM, Mark MW0RZS, John G3YPZ and Simon MW0NWM. We are planning to organise a quarterly club newsletter, two annual weekend AM activity events, AM contests and construction events. We plan to join the RSGB and other national societies based on where our members live.

We shall be holding our first AGM on Wednesday 21st July at 19:00 UTC (20:00 BST) on Zoom.

So we have lots of plans, but to make a success of this we need members to help support this work and make the club successful!

Radio Amateur Helps Rescuers to Locate Lost Hiker

Radio Amateur Helps Rescuers to Locate Lost Hiker

The keen and practiced eye of ARRL member Ben Kuo, AI6YR, helped to guide rescuers to a hiker stranded on a mountainside on April 12. Hiker Rene Compean, 45, had spent the night in a remote region of the Angeles National Forest after getting in a tough spot. After a concerned friend reported Compean missing on Monday, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department dispatched search-and-rescue (SAR) teams. Although amateur radio played no direct role in the rescue, Kuo cited his enthusiasm for technology and ham radio satellites and for Summits on the Air (SOTA) for helping him to develop the skills he needed to guide searchers to the most appropriate area.

Radio Ham Receives Federal Cross of Merit

Radio amateur Prof. Dr.-Ing, Ulrich Rohde, DJ2LR, has been awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany

At the suggestion of the Bavarian Prime Minister Dr. Markus Söder (CSU), the Federal President has awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany to the well-known professor, entrepreneur and radio amateur Prof. Dr.-Ing, Ulrich Rohde, DJ2LR. With this award, the Federal President honoured the great achievements of DJ2LR in the fields of high frequency and microwave technology.

Dr. Ulrich Rohde is also considered to be the inventor of SDR technology, which he first presented at a conference in 1985. In recognition of this pioneering development, which is used today in practically all communication technology and also in amateur radio, there was a special call sign DL35SDR last year.

Prof. Dr.-Ing Ulrich Rohde is a co-partner of the Munich-based company of the same name for high-frequency and measurement technology and celebrated his 80th birthday last year. He is a member of the DARC OV München-Süd (C18).
