John Hislop (G7OHO) joins RSGB’s Examinations and Syllabus Review Group

The RSGB’s Examinations and Syllabus Review Group (ESRG) is delighted to announce the appointment of John Hislop, G7OHO to the group. John is a retired physics teacher and has been licensed since 1992. During his teaching career, he taught the Novice and Foundation Licences to many youngsters during after-school clubs and set up radio stations at each of the schools. As a STEM Ambassador, John now runs outreach sessions at a youth club in Ramsgate and the youngsters joined him in an RSGB presentation “Having fun with electronics, coding and amateur radio” at the RSGB 2021 Online Convention. He is currently writing a youngster’s manual for the Foundation Licence, which includes many engaging activities. John is also the Vice Chairman of Hilderstone Radio Society.

Dr. Ulrich Rohde, N1UL/DJ2LR/DL1R, to Be Inducted to the Indian National Academy of Engineering

The Indian National Academy of Engineering (INAE) will induct Dr. Ulrich Rohde, N1UL, as a fellow during ceremonies in mid-December. Dr. Rohde is only the third foreign fellow elected by the INAE, preceded by Dr. Jeffrey Wineland, who won a Nobel Prize in Physics, and Dr. Philip H. Knight.

In the formal announcement issued November 19, 2022, the INAE thanked Dr. Rohde for "outstanding contributions to engineering and also your dynamic leadership in engineering domain, which have immensely contributed for the faster development of the country."

The INAE was founded in 1987 and describes itself as including "India's most distinguished engineers, engineer-scientists, and technologists covering the entire spectrum of engineering disciplines."

RSGB Morse Test Coordinator Appointed

The RSGB have announced that Eric Arkinstall, M0KZB has been appointed as the RSGB’s Morse Test Coordinator.

His role comprises two main tasks:

  • Contacting approved Morse assessors around the country and emailing them the contact details of candidates wanting to take a Morse test

  • Emailing a Certificate of Competency to the candidate after a successful test

From a young age, Eric’s hobby was electronics and he has always been interested in radio.

He built his first crystal set when he was about 11 years old, with parts freely available from wartime stock.

Eric teaches Morse code on the air weekly.
