International Marconi Day 2020 - Canceled

The annual International Marconi Day (IMD) ham radio operating event that was set to take place on 25th April 2020 has been cancelled because of the coronavirus pandemic. The 24-hour amateur radio event celebrates the birth of Marconi on 25th April 1874. Sponsored by the Cornish Radio Amateur Club, which operates as GB4IMD, International Marconi Day features participating stations operating at sites having a personal connection to Marconi, including places where he set up transmitting and receiving stations.

International Lighthouse Lightship Weekend 2020 Plans for the Best

The organising team of the International Lighthouse Lightship Weekend 2020 are staying positive that this summers event will go ahead. The intention is for some kind of operation, allowing each site to make the decision to participate depending on the circumstances in his or her country at that time.

In view of the fact that the 75th anniversary of Victory in the Pacific, or VP day, takes place on 15th August, the normal weekend for the iLLW, it was decided, out of respect for those wishing to commemorate that event, to move the ILLW to 22nd-23rd August 2020.

The move hasn’t so far affected entries as 134 have registered so far. Numbers are expected to be down on previous years due to the closure of national parks and country borders but rest assured there is no intention to close it down.

One of the more interesting entries for this year involves an Englishman and his 14 year old daughter. They intend to ride their bicycles (pedal) from Lands End in Cornwall to John O’Groats and then across to Cape Wrath Lighthouse at the top end of Scotland.

The journey is around 1200 miles long and will take at least 2 weeks. It really is amazing the lengths some amateurs will go to to take part in this event. We wish them a safe journey and an enjoyable weekend.
