Celebrating the Dawn of Mass Global Communication

In October 2024, Radio Amateurs in the UK and New Zealand will be celebrating and re-enacting the world’s very first trans-global two-way radio communication. Special callsigns will be active, and awards and QSL cards will be available for those who make contact with these special stations.

At the turn of the last century, radio communication was in its infancy. The properties of "Hertzian Waves" – what we now call radio waves - were only just beginning to be understood.

Starting with Marconi, the use of a crude form of radio communication began to evolve. The development of the thermionic valve then opened up opportunities both in radio transmitter and receiver design. However, the "conventional wisdom" remained that the longer wavelengths of radio signals (as used by Marconi) were those most suited to long-distance radio communication.

Churches and Chapels on the Air 2024

Churches and Chapels on the Air (CHOTA) 2024 will take place on September 14th. CHOTA was first established in 2013 and encourages fellowship among both activators and chasers.

A list of participating stations is available on the CHOTA 2024 website. CHOTA is managed by The World Association of Christian Amateurs and Listeners (WACRAL).

Meme Appreciation Month is on the Air

Meme Appreciation Month is an on-air event for young hams to "spread joy & cheer to all the good little hams on the RF spectrum." The event takes place June 15 through August 15 on all the Megahertz. Awards are available and can be checked here.

The shenanigans started 2022 with the first ever Meme Apprecation Month and iconic callsigns such as VB4LIGMA, VB3YEET, VC9CATGIRL, VC3RIKROLL, VC3DEEZ and many more. The second event in 2023 birthed callsigns such as VC9FEMBOY, DZ2NUTS, PD33ZDOGE and DL0NGCAT.
