Boy Scouts create amateur radio station

North Florida Council of the Boy Scouts are creating an amateur radio station KB4SA

"Amateur radio is a rewarding hobby that allows Scouts to learn, not only about radio and electronics, but also that it goes hand-in-hand with duty to country and community," said Peter Duzant K4PAD, the station founder.

Raspberry Pi used for Amateur Radio

AMSAT-UK and AMSAT-NA member Dave Johnson, G4DPZ, has been using the Raspberry Pi to run amateur radio satellite software.

The £22 Model B Raspberry Pi is a credit-card sized ARM-based computer board that plugs into a TV and a keyboard.

Based around the 700 MHz ARM11 processor the board has 256 MB SDRAM, two USB ports, Ethernet with composite and HDMI video outputs. Low-level peripherals are GPIO pins, SPI, I²C, I²S and UART.

It was developed in Cambridgeshire by a UK registered charity, the Raspberry Pi Foundation, which exists to promote the study of computer science and related topics, especially at school level, and to put the fun back into learning computing.

Dave's Raspberry Pi runs Debian Squeeze with Xwindows and is accessed using VNC over his shack network.

The first amateur radio application he got running was GPredict (thanks go to Alex Csete OZ9AEC for making such a portable implementation). Updates of Keplerian

Two Line Elements (KEP / TLE) from the Internet worked perfectly.

SSTV QuickStart for TS-590S

Ian Wade G3NRW has released a Kenwood TS-590S Slow Scan TV (SSTV) QuickStart Guide.

“We all know how useful the TS-590S USB port is when running digital modes. No interface unit is necessary - you just connect the PC to the radio with a standard off-the-shelf USB cable and you're in business. It couldn't be easier!” says Ian

Exactly the same applies when using the USB port for analog audio.

“My new HOWTO explains how to configure MMSSTV (one of the world's most popular analog SSTV packages) to work with the TS-590S. Again, it couldn't be easier.”
