Radio Amateur Helps Rescuers to Locate Lost Hiker

The keen and practiced eye of ARRL member Ben Kuo, AI6YR, helped to guide rescuers to a hiker stranded on a mountainside on April 12. Hiker Rene Compean, 45, had spent the night in a remote region of the Angeles National Forest after getting in a tough spot. After a concerned friend reported Compean missing on Monday, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department dispatched search-and-rescue (SAR) teams. Although amateur radio played no direct role in the rescue, Kuo cited his enthusiasm for technology and ham radio satellites and for Summits on the Air (SOTA) for helping him to develop the skills he needed to guide searchers to the most appropriate area.

YOTA Summer Camp Croatia Postponed to 2022

The IARU Region 1 Youth Working Group has to announce the following news.

The YOTA summer camp Croatia, which had already been postponed to 2021 last year, has to be postponed once again to 2022 due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

This difficult decision was made together with HRS officials (Croatian Amateur Radio Society) following the IARU-R1-wide COVID-19 event cancellation policy.

The IARU Region 1 secretary has been informed about this decision on Sunday, 18.04.2021. We, the IARU Region 1 Youth Working Group, will keep you updated on any news regarding upcoming in-person events.

GB5UTA Active in June for U3A Event

GB5UTA will be on-the-air June 1-28 promoting Amateur Radio among the 450,000 strong University of the Third Age (U3A) an organisation that aims to help people learn, stay active and have fun in later life

This Special Event station will be active June 1-28 operating on behalf of the Cirencester and Tetbury branches of the University of the Third Age (U3A). On June 2 the branches will be celebrating U3A Day alongside other UK branches.
