Senator Thanks Radio Amateurs

Mississippi US Senator Roger Wicker, has thanked ham radio operators for their lifesaving role during Hurricane Katrina

When Hurricane Katrina knocked out communication services on the Coast, amateur radio operators provided many people with their only contact to the outside world. Recently, U.S. Sen. Roger Wicker came to South Mississippi to personally thank the operators who played a critical role during the disaster.

Whilst meeting the team of radio operators, Wicker took up the opportunity to make his first amateur radio contact to commemorate Hurricane Katrina.

"This is Kilo 5 Alpha, K5A, special events station for the 10th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina," Wicker announced over the radio.

Wicker picked up some new communication skills during a visit with some ham operators at the Central Jackson County EOC building in Vancleave.

It’s a good opportunity for us to thank the amateur radio operators for their role in helping the public and helping to save lives and helping to get information out that was vitally needed

Radio Amateur’s Antenna Mast Planning Victory

UK radio amateur Martin Cranage (G8OFA) has successfully won a planning battle over an antenna mast erection.

Cranage’s neighbour had been objecting to the radio mast and the matter went before council planners, where Professor Cranage was told he could keep the aerial he put up without planning permission.

Cranage said he was 'absolutely delighted' and called it a 'common sense decision'.

Both Martin G8OFA and his wife Janet G8RHC have been licenced over 37 years.
