Whilst the uneducated perception is of Amateur radio  as a hobby for older people, at the Burton Amateur Radio Club, UK, steps are being taken to promote a more youthful member amongst the 15 Adult members,
 
Ben Cridland, from Swadlincote first started going to the weekly meetings, held at the Stapenhill Institute, with his father, Rob Cridland G7LAS three years ago - and now he is completely hooked.
 
The 10-year-old explained that his love for amateur radio comes from the number of different opportunities that come from being involved.

'New' Belize Amateur Radio Club Admitted to IARU Membership

The member societies of the International Amateur Radio Union (IARU) have approved a proposal to admit a new representative of the radio amateurs of Belize to IARU membership
 
77 member-societies had voted in favour of admitting the Belize Amateur Radio Club (BARC) with none opposed. There were no abstentions. The affirmative votes of 55 member-societies were required for approval.
 
Belize previously was represented in the IARU by another organisation of the same name. Once the IARU Administrative Council determined that this earlier organisation no longer existed, IARU Region 2 accepted an application for membership from the new BARC and confirmed that it satisfied the requirements of the IARU Constitution and Bylaws.
 
The officers of BARC are:

  • Dr. Andre T. Scholz, V31DL, Vice President and IARU Liaison
  • Steven Harp, V31SH, Secretary

Money Raised for Eye Surgery

North Carolina Amateur Radio Group, Raleigh Amateur Radio Society (RARS) have been helping to raise funds for "BJ" Jenkins NC4BJ to have surgery on his eyes
 
"BJ" started losing his eyesight about 10 years ago due to macular degeneration and with the help of his brother is raising money for experimental, stem cell surgery on his eyes.
 
Flyers with raffle tickets were handed out at the ham radio festival in Raleigh on 15th April 2017. The Raleigh Amateur Radio Society (RARS) donated a table and announced from the stage information about Mr Jenkins’ fundraiser. 
 
Support from the event's attendees was outstanding, with over $1200 raised from the generous Ham Radio Community.
