NP2J from U.S. Virgin Islands

Dan Flaig, K8RF, will be active full-time as NP2J from St. Croix upto and during the CQWW DX CW Contest (24-25th November 2018) as a Single-Op/Single-Band (160m) entry.

Mainly working 160 meters now, will have a 40 meter antenna working soon that can be used with antenna tuner to get on 30 and 17 Meters. Planning on putting up Tribander for higher bands by end of year.

Will be on 160 meters for most DX contests this year, but may do all band effort for ARRL contests. I work 90% CW, 10% SSB and 0% Digital.

Dan has been very active on Six meters CW earlier this year with a six element Yagi, conditions were excellent but CW activity diminished to almost nothing by the end of the season.

Robert Wareham, N0ESQ, Appointed as Rocky Mountain Division Vice Director

ARRL President Rick Roderick, K5UR, has named Robert Wareham, N0ESQ, of Highlands Ranch, Colorado, as Rocky Mountain Division Vice Director. Wareham will serve the remaining term of Jeff Ryan, K0RM, who assumed the position of Rocky Mountain Director upon the resignation of Dwayne Allen, WY7FD.

An ARRL Life Member, Wareham has been serving as Colorado Section Emergency Coordinator since 2011. He previously served in the Field Organization as Colorado’s State Government Liaison and as Public Information Officer. An attorney, Wareham assisted in drafting the bill that created the Colorado Auxiliary Emergency Communications Unit (AuxComm) in 2016. AuxComm is a unit of the Colorado Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management (DHSEM) and is managed by Colorado ARES leadership under a Memorandum of Understanding.

Wareham also was instrumental in drafting a provision exempting Amateur Radio licensees from a hands-free cell phone bill, and for drafting a bill codifying the provisions of the limited federal pre-emption known as PRB-1 into Colorado law. He has been providing pro bono legal assistance to Colorado Amateur Radio clubs for many years.

Wareham will serve the remainder of the Vice Director’s term, which runs through 2019.

Former ARRL Headquarters Book Team Supervisor Jan Carman, K5MA, SK

R. Jan Carman, K5MA (ex-W5SBX, W3JXS), who was a member of the ARRL Headquarters staff from 2001 until 2003 died on 13th November 2018. An ARRL Life Member, he was 76.

Carman’s career spanned the fields of aerospace, oil-field equipment, industrial control and instrumentation, underwater acoustics, communication systems, manufacturing automation and consulting. Carman held bachelor’s and master’s degrees in electrical engineering from the University of Pennsylvania, and he was active with the University of Pennsylvania Amateur Radio Club (W3ABT).

His Amateur Radio interests included contesting, DXing and VHF/UHF weak signal work. He is a member of the DXCC Honor Roll and the First Class CW Operators Club (FOC). He also was a member of the Yankee Clipper Contest Club. He was a past president of the Texas DX Society.
