France: New Online Directory of Radio Amateurs

France: New Online Directory of Radio Amateurs

On 30th June 2021 a new version of the directory of radio amateurs developed by the National Frequency Agency (ANFR) was made available online

This directory makes it possible to find the French callsigns, the address of a radio club, the manager of a repeating station or the special callsigns issued by our services. The evolution put online responds to many requests from the amateur radio community.

This new version takes into account the prerogatives of respect for personal data imposed by the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

CHESS CubeSats Will Not Carry Amateur Radio Payloads

It was announced in January that two CHESS CubeSats set for launch in 2022 would carry amateur radio linear transponders. The project sponsors announced on June 10, however, that neither CHESS satellite would include an amateur radio payload.

CHESS project management, citing funding constraints, had to move the project toward a purely scientific program using a commercial CubeSat platform, which has less space for the planned ham radio transponders. CHESS project management also will not use frequencies allocated to the Amateur Satellite Service, but will use Earth exploration or experimental UHF and X-band frequencies.

The ham community, which assured the funding of the transponder, is very disappointed by this decision but must accept it. Such projects always carry risks of one partner changing its mind. That is what happened here. Many thanks to all who have actively supported the transponder project, especially the AMSAT-UK and AMSAT-NL team.

ARRL Announces Partnership with Maglite

ARRL The National Association for Amateur Radio® and Mag Instrument, the US manufacturer of the MAGLITE® Flashlight have announced they have formed a partnership based on common interests in equipping people to be prepared for emergencies and to serve their communities in extreme situations such as natural disasters. ARRL members expand the reservoir of trained operators and technicians in radio communications and radio technology, and provide public service through the ARRL Amateur Radio Emergency Service® (ARES®). Maglite is the leading maker of U.S.-manufactured high-quality flashlights that have a deserved reputation for toughness and durability.

Amateur radio operators, or ‘hams,’ help people in times of difficulty, often by supporting emergency communications when critical infrastructure is damaged, and by aiding first responders’ need to keep connected. We manufacture a product that has been used in public safety for over 40 years, and we are very supportive of the incredible dedication of radio amateurs, so culturally this is a great alliance for both brands.
— Anthony Maglica, Founder, Owner and CEO of MAG Instrument Ince
“ARRL is delighted that Maglite recognizes the service and skill of ARRL members. This partnership will help us introduce amateur radio to more people,
