New Youth Amateur Radio Club

The Young Hamsters are a club exclusively for young amateurs under the age of 30; promoting contesting, DXpeditions and operating amongst youngsters. The club is primarily active as MX0YHC and MS0YHC.

There is not currently any single club across the whole of the United Kingdom for young amateurs to come together and as such this represents a fantastic opportunity for people to join with a pioneering club in amateur radio to really further our hobby.

Membership is completely free and there are no forms to fill in - simply email younghamsters@gmail.com to join or search for The Young Hamsters on Facebook!

New Amateur / Ham Radio Band on 5 MHz

During the recent WRC-15 convention in Geneva,  a new amateur service allocation at 5 MHz was approved

The small 15 kHz allocation between 5351.5 - 5366.5 kHz is the first new allocation at HF since the WARC of 1979.

After intense pressure from the Fixed service primary user, power limits have been set at 15 Watts eirp in Regions 1 and 3, 20 Watts eirp in Mexico and 25 Watts eirp in Central America, South America and most of the Caribbean area.

Region 1 Member Societies not having an allocation under Article 4.4 of the Radio Regulations are urged to contact their administration to have this narrow segment included in their licence, although the new Radio Regulations will not come into force until January 1, 2017.

Emergency Communications Changes in Oregon

The state of Oregon, USA have decided to cut ties with the Oregon Amateur Radio Service.

The state, which suffers from natural disasters including major earthquakes, appear to have no back-up communication with the removal of the amateur radio community.

A breakdown in the relationship appears to be centred around the issue of the state of the broadcasting equipment and a lack of control in relation to preparation and deployment.
