Trinidad and Tobago Lighthouse Joins Ham Radio Event

The historic Toco Lighthouse at Point Galera on Trinidad's northeast Coast is a new country for the International Lighthouse and Lightship Weekend held on the third weekend of August.

The site first began as ship navigation in 1897, with it being recently being refurbished into a centre for tourism and community activity.

The site, registered by Tony Sandy 9Z4A has had its lantern was removed - the structure and surrounds have become a key feature amid the spectacular flora and fauna.

Currently there are 130 registrations have been received from 24 countries for the International Lighthouse and Lightship Weekend.

Germany remains in the lead with 30, Australia 20, and the USA with 15, followed by England, Scotland and Holland.

ZS1MM Beacon Now Operational

The ZS1MM Beacon on 144,414 MHz is now on the air from Bredasdorp.

For the first time, a VHF beacon is covering the southern coast from Cape Town to Port Elizabeth and East London.

ZS1MM was erected by Leon Korkie, ZS1MM, at his QTH in Bredasdorp, operates on a frequency of 144,414 MHz CW and radiates a bi-directional horizontally polarised signal from a dipole. Signal reports are invited.

Emergency Ham Radio Equipment for Indiana Hospital

Amateur radio equipment will be installed in St. Vincent Clay Hospital in Clay County, Indiana, US, thanks to a nearly $2,000 grant from the State's Department of Homeland Security 

Emergency Management Director Bryan Husband received permission to apply for the grant during Monday's meeting of the Clay County Commissioners. 

The equipment will be installed and, should it be necessary, operated by RACES (Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Service) amateur radio operators.

Husband said that during an emergency, the RACES radio station would be on the air, communicating with those outside Clay County, on behalf of Clay County Emergency Management.
