Our radio club has had a pretty solid relationship with our county’s department of public safety for many years. That has since begun to dry up now that they have a new communication system that seems to check off all their boxes. As a result, they aren’t including us in real emergency situations like they used to and they’re reluctant to participate in our emergency tests where we practice. In short, I think the marriage is about over.

Free ARRL Events App Now Available for Apple iOS and Android Devices

The ARRL Events app, which will be featured at Orlando HamCation, is now available for both Apple iOS and Android devices. A web-browser version, optimized for nearly any browser or other mobile device type, is also available to view. Orlando HamCation 2020 takes place 7-9 February 2019 and has been sanctioned as the 2020 ARRL Northern Florida Section Convention. Hosted annually by the Orlando Amateur Radio Club, HamCation is one of the largest annual amateur radio gatherings in the US.

New 2 Metre Filter Stops Interference

Many handie-talky radios suffer from severe interference from nearby transmitters, particularly on hilltop sites. Blocking is a reduction in sensitivity that can be hard to detect. When a radio is being blocked all callers (even strong ones) can appear weak or may even be undetectable.

The SOTABEAMS bandpass filter is a small, rugged and lightweight filter that eliminates virtually all interference problems. The filter is a helical design that is made especially for SOTABEAMS. It is simply attached between the radio and antenna.
