Got a Problem? Ask a Ham!

When local police in West Bengal India had a problem, they didn’t call other police - they called a group of hams! Their handheld radios were being knocked out of service by holiday lights decorating the parks for recent Hindu festivals. The hams, with the help of a club member who is a physicist, ran tests on the radios and realized that the cheaply made holiday lights were the issue. When lit, the LEDs emitted a noise on a frequency very close to the one the police radios were using. The hams said “change the bulbs” with better-quality bulbs which just happened to be made in India……and problem solved.
