Ofcom looking at 2.4 and 5GHz Amateur Radio Bands for Internet of Things

Devices of the future (Internet of Things - IoT) require interconnectivity and exchange of data between many devices, sensors and machines, potentially opening up a wider range of cross-sector benefits.

The IoT is expected to lead to the introduction of many new and innovative services, for example to improve our health, reduce road traffic accidents and reduce the consumption of energy. There is the potential for significant benefits to citizens and consumers and, in the longer term, the IoT could change the way we live our lives.

The Call for Inputs seeks views to inform our understanding of these and other developments, enabling Ofcom to better support the emergence of the IoT. Many IoT devices will be connected wirelessly and the availability of radio spectrum will be an important enabler.

In light of Ofcom’s duties to manage spectrum, and the potential for significant benefits for citizens and consumers, we have identified the IoT as a priority for further work.

The closing date for submissions is 1st October 2014.

Hiker thanks ham radio operators and rescuers

On Monday 21 July 2014, Bill Eberle AB0MY worked with two other ham radio operators to direct rescuers to the man's location in a part of western Boulder County where cellphone service remains nonexistent.

Broomfield resident Michael Schuett was hiking with his fiancee, Mary Gruda, just after noon Monday near the Fourth of July Campground, west of Nederland, when he lost his footing while crossing a creek and fell.

"I fell forward onto a boulder and cracked my head open," Schuett, 67, said Tuesday afternoon as he sat in his home with a mild concussion and 11 stitches in his forehead. "I totally lost consciousness. I was lying face down in the water."
