BBC Starts Roll-Out of International Radio App

The BBC launched an international BBC iPlayer Radio app in Eire, the first stage of its global roll-out

Available in the UK since 2012, the free BBC iPlayer Radio app will transform access to BBC Radio programmes internationally, making it easier for audiences around the world to listen to a variety of BBC radio stations, including BBC World Service English, on their devices wherever they are.

BBC World Service in English, which has a global audience of 66m, will automatically display on a touchscreen dial when users outside the UK open the app for the first time. Users can simply spin the dial to access more BBC Radio stations and discover more world-class content which includes news, music, drama, comedy.

As well as access to live radio programmes from the World Service and radio stations across the UK, users around the world with the app can:

  • Catch up or listen again to their favourite BBC Radio programmes
  • Download podcasts to enjoy anywhere, even when offline
  • Browse and listen to carefully curated BBC Radio highlights and collections
  • View daily schedules and categories quickly and easily
  • Discover audio and video clips, including many live performances
  • See what tracks are playing on air as well as track lists for on-demand programmes
  • Wake up to and doze off to BBC Radio with a built-in alarm clock and night mode

The BBC iPlayer Radio app is freely available to download from the Apple App Store, Google Play and Amazon Store.

US Ham’s Save Kids from Surrounded Campfire

Children were rescued from recently from a campfire incident at the Lovell Canyon Ranch after a distress call was made by Michael Hilbert K2UZ.

The children were taking part in a camp designed for special needs when the incident happened. After the campers and staff left the ranch, the call was made, and picked up by Lynden Kendrick KG7SXQ.

Lynden Kendrick KG7SXQ was talking on his radio to a fellow ham in Malad City, Idaho, on a radio system known locally as the “InterMountain Intertie,” a system of unmanned amateur radio repeaters linked up and down the state of Utah and into Nevada, Arizona, Montana, Wyoming and Idaho when the call was received.

The alarm was raised, and to the emergency services in Valley Electric in Pahrump, who sent firefighters to attend the incident and bring the fire under control.

Kendrick was also able to make contact with power companies to restore power to the site.

The RSGB EMC committee have made available a new leaflet covering the subject of earthing

The leaflet discusses the background to the safety issues involved in connecting a Radio Frequency (RF) earth to an amateur radio installation and directs the reader to the appropriate sections of the current IET Wiring Regulations (BS7671) 17th Edition [See Ref 1 in endnotes for the full title].
