SW Broadcaster to Cover IARU R1 Conference

Radio DARC — the shortwave broadcast program of the Deutscher Amateur Radio Club in Germany (DARC) — has announced plans to broadcast six programs during the 24th International Amateur Radio Union Region 1 (IARU-R1) Conference, 16-22 September 2017 taking place in Landshut, Germany.

Rainer Englert, DF2NU, of Radio DARC said the broadcasts from the conference, in English, will keep the IARU Region 1 ham radio audience up to date with news and background reports.

Although targeted to IARU Region 1, the transmissions are likely to be heard in North America, too, as 2000 kW EIRP from a log periodic antenna will be used for the Western European beam in the 31-meter broadcast band.

Radio DARC is the weekly magazine of the German Amateur Radio Club for radio amateurs and shortwave listeners, with three broadcasts on 6,070 kHz for Europe. Typical programs contain DX news, technical features, and reports from the DARC, as well as commentary, propagation forecasts and music from the 1970s and 1980s. After the discontinuation of Deutsche Welle and other shortwave broadcasters, the weekly DARC program is one of the few remaining from Germany.

Morsum Magnificat Available for Free Download

The English language edition of Morsum Magnificat, the Morse Magazine, otherwise known as “MM”, contained a vast amount of information and illustrations of interest to Morse operators, key collectors, historians, researchers and other Morse enthusiasts.

Published from 1986 to 2004, in 89 issues, with readers and contributors around the world, it covered every conceivable aspect of Morse telegraphy, past, present and future, in a truly international way.

With the permission of the copyright holder, Zyg Nilski, G3OKD, this vast resource is now available for download in PDF format, free of charge, thanks to the generosity of Lynn Burlingame N7CFO who was a reader of, and contributor to, MM.

Included in the downloads is an updated and revised version of the MM 54-page Key WT 8 Amp Worldwide Survey which has proved to be of great interest to both users and collectors of the many versions of this famous pre-war, wartime and post-war military Morse key.

MM was first published in the Dutch language, by Morse enthusiasts, Rinus Hellemons PA0BFN, and Dick Kraayveld PA3ALM. They were later joined by Tony Smith G4FAI who helped them launch the English language edition of the magazine.

After Rinus died, G4FAI produced and edited MM alone until he was joined by Geoff Arnold G3GSR, one-time editor of Practical Wireless and founder of Radio Bygones. Later, Zyg Nilski G3OKD took over as editor and produced the final 28 issues of the magazine.

50 MHz Band Experimentation

An RSGB draft paper proposes 50 MHz Band Plan changes to support Digital Innovation

The document has been posted to the RSGB "C5 - VHF/Microwave Matters" forum as part of the preparations for the conference in Landshut, 16-23 September 2017.

The paper says the objective should be to enable areas where for example up to 50 kHz bandwidth channels can be made available and could be promoted for digital innovation.
